Chinese gladiolus: features of planting and care

There is such a plant, Chinese gladiolus, a photo, planting and care of which will be presented and described below. Chinese gladiolus or montbrecia grows not only in a cultural form, decorating flower beds and front gardens, but also in the wild nature of hot South Africa. In Greek, the name sounds like the scent of saffron, which is justified, since the smell of dried flowers reminds everyone of a well-known plant.

Chinese gladioli have amazing flowers, this can be seen by looking at the photo. Flowers of various colors - yellow, red, orange. The plant is relatively unpretentious in care, and the season of bright flowers continues until late autumn. Cut Chinese gladiolus does not fade for a long time, which allows you to use flowers to create beautiful bouquets. How to grow gladioli in your area, how to propagate and care for the plant to please with lush flowering for more than one year?

Reproduction of Chinese gladiolus

You can grow gladioli from seeds, bulbs or their children. Sowing of seeds is carried out in late winter or early spring in special containers with soil, which should be on a well-lit window. After the gladioli sprout, they can be transplanted with the soil into the ground in the flower beds or in the garden. This is best done in May, when the earth warms up enough, and the plant grows and gets stronger.

Chinese gladioli are perennial plants, but if you plant them from seeds, then they will begin to bloom for 2 or 3 years. If instead of seeds, children of gladioli are used, then flowering will begin for 2 years. When planting montbrecia on a flower bed, one interesting feature should be taken into account - flowers are prone to over-pollination, therefore, to preserve all the shades of bright buds, they need to be planted at a certain distance from each other.

Chinese gladiolus loves the sun and warmth. If you plant it in a shaded place, then the plant may not bloom. Stagnant waters or those where groundwater is too close to the surface of the earth should also be avoided. High humidity is detrimental to the plant.

How to plant Chinese gladiolus

Growing and caring for Chinese gladiolus

Planting and caring for montbrecia involves moderate watering and weeding of the soil after rain, so that the earth is airy and does not clog the plant. To accelerate the growth and flowering of Chinese gladioli, they can be fed with nitrogen fertilizer or tincture of cow manure. In addition to organic fertilizers, minerals containing potassium are also suitable.

After the bud has fully blossomed, it is necessary to prune the stem almost to the base, so that the bulb is saturated with nutrients before the onset of cold weather and better tolerates frost in the ground. If the climate in winter is quite severe, then the bulbs must be dug up before the onset of cold weather, and in the spring planted in the ground. Bulbs should be stored in the basement or pantry, where the air temperature does not exceed 8 °. If it is impossible to predict the season, then for safety reasons, bulbs wintering in the ground need to be covered with a thick layer of fallen leaves and a film should be placed on top. In the spring, the film and foliage are removed so that the flowers at the right time make their way through the ground and enjoy the beautiful view in the summer.

Gladioli, whose bulbs have been in the ground for more than 3 years, can grow worse and bloom less. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to dig out the bulbs 1 and every 3 years and plant them again in the spring. This will help to propagate the plant with the help of bulbs and their children, so that you do not have to grow flowers from seeds again.

Chinese gladiolus is resistant to many diseases and pests. The only ones that are dangerous are the bear and thrips, which can negatively affect the growth and flowering of the plant. If pests are noticed, you will need to purchase a special tool and process the flowers.

Planting montbrecia from bulbs

Chinese gladioli grow beautifully from bulbs that need to be brought into the house before planting and separated from overgrown children. To make the bulb more resilient, it must be treated with a potassium permanganate solution immediately before planting in the ground.

The soil for montbration should be loose, well fertilized with organic or mineral components. A place for planting flowers can be prepared since the fall, using sand for drainage. If desired, the soil can be neutralized from possible pathogens by treating it with a solution of potassium permanganate.

The distance from one bulb to another should be at least 10 cm. The holes can be made with a shovel or a chopper, their depth should be about 4 cm. For the montbreeding to bloom earlier, it is better to germinate the bulb before planting in special containers. It is necessary to plant sprouted bulbs together with the earth, which is in the pot.

Despite the similarity of the plant in name and shape of the bulbs with gladiolus, montbrecia is much better than its well-known congener, as it is more durable and unpretentious in care.

It does not require such thorough watering as regular gladiolus and does not need frequent feeding.

Chinese gladiolus is suitable for decorating large and small flower beds. It can be grown with any other flowers - chrysanthemums, echinacea, cannes, dahlias, daylilies, where a gladiolus will complement these wonderful plants and help create a unique composition in the garden.

Before buying Chinese gladiolus, you should carefully read about the variety itself (and there are a lot of them), since some plants can reach a height of more than 1 meter (for example, the Montbrecia Lucifer variety, which is not only tall, but also rich in red). This will require planting them not in small flower beds, where undersized ones are suitable, but for large areas or for decorating hedges. The largest flowers are from the Star of the East variety, where the bud in diameter exceeds 9 cm.
